Bari · Puglia · Southern Italy
Executive L'Orangerie is the ideal starting point for exploring one of Italy's most remarkable regions — minutes from the heart of Bari and less than an hour from the white towns, the trulli and the crystal-clear sea.
The city
Bari is lively, contradictory and magnetic. The old town — one of the densest medieval centres in southern Italy — huddles around the Basilica of San Nicola, the city's patron saint and a destination for pilgrims from around the world. A few steps away, the 19th-century Murattiano district opens onto the seafront, the Petruzzelli Theatre and the shops of Via Sparano.
Food in Bari is a religion: orecchiette with turnip tops, rice, potatoes and mussels, sgagliozze fried on the spot at the old-town market. The harbour looks out over the Adriatic towards Albania — Bari is a city of passage and exchange, never just a destination.
The region
Puglia is unlike anywhere else. The heel of Italy's boot packs radically different landscapes into a few kilometres: the sun-scorched, silent Murgia, the Itria Valley with its white trulli, the Salento with its low coastline and Caribbean-blue sea, the Gargano covered in forests and cliffs.
45 min from Bari
Alberobello
The trulli, dry-stone buildings with conical roofs, are the icon of the Itria Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Alberobello is a sight unlike any other — best early in the morning or in the evening, outside coach-tour hours.
30 min from Bari
Polignano a Mare
Perched on cliffs above the Adriatic, with ravines and sea caves of rare beauty. The old town is a maze of white alleys. Birthplace of Domenico Modugno — "Volare" still echoes on every corner.
75 min from Bari
Matera
Technically in Basilicata, but unmissable. The Sassi — the ancient cave town carved into the tuff — are one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. European Capital of Culture 2019. An experience that changes your perspective.
60 min from Bari
Ostuni
The White City par excellence: a whitewashed town on a hilltop overlooking olive groves and the sea. All around, one of the largest olive-growing plains in Italy — thousand-year-old trees that look like sculptures.
45 min from Bari
Castellana Caves
Italy's longest karst cave system: over 3 km of tunnels, caverns and stalactites. The White Cave, at the end of the route, is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. A trip for every season.
50 min from Bari
Castel del Monte
· Trani · Barletta
North of Bari lies Norman Puglia: the mysterious octagonal castle of Frederick II, Trani's Romanesque cathedral that seems to rise from the sea, the calm, luminous waters of the northern Adriatic coast.
